Tomato as Stimulus

September 30, 2009

Today I realized that people really enjoy talking about interesting and unique food. Three times we were stopped by strangers who wanted to discuss the grotesquely beautiful tomato we had in hand. Grown here in Carlsbad at Valdivia Farms, the tomato elicited the broadest smiles, and stories about the ups and downs of backyard gardening. […]

Squash Sublime– Food and Photography

A few months ago, I went to New Zealand to learn about local food systems and farming, and ended up in a lovely place called Karibu Creek in the Northland, where I met some […]

The White House Heirloom Garden

September 19, 2009

I didn’t know that the current White House vegetable garden is the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in WWII. They’re using seeds from Monticello which Jefferson collected from around the world. I really enjoyed this mini-documentary about the White House garden with chef Sam Kass:

Know your Farmer; Know your Food. A new era of US ag policy?

September 17, 2009

Ag secretary Vilsack has announced a new USDA initiative called “Know your Farmer; Know your Food” (#KYF2 on twitter.) The project aims to support small and local farms while boosting consumer awareness of what they’re putting in their bodies. And this appears to be more than mere lip service. At least $65 million dollars of […]
