An Amazing Example of Permaculture in the Jordan Desert

by @jaredpeters on October 5, 2009

My good friend Shelley Grossman recently passed along this video that outlines a permaculture system established in the salty Jordan desert. Here Geoff Lawton of the Permaculture Research Institute describes the project which uses no pesticides, no fertilizers, and only naturally occurring rain water. What they are able to achieve is remarkable. Using only one-fifth of the water commonly used for irrigating farmland in this area, they have created an oasis of rich soil teeming with biodiversity. The locals had never seen a mushroom before until they started naturally cropping up amidst an array of beneficial microorganisms. It strikes me that this project absolutely undercuts just about any argument made by Monsanto and other proponents of GM crops who claim that only with their products can the deserts of Africa be replenished. The significance of it’s location is also hard to ignore. A mere 2K from where Jesus was baptized, the earth is producing again. Watch:
